Well, our library workers are on strike! So, that gives me an opportunity to reduce my bookshelf books. My choice this week is
This is a book written by Yasmina Khadra a pseudonym. Haven't read one of these in a great long time. I find it curious that this author (a man) wrote with a woman's name, and it was acceptable, considering the subject matter.
Set in Kabul under the rule of the Taliban, this extraordinary novel takes readers into the lives of two couples: Mohsen, who comes from a family of wThe Unquiet Deadealthy shopkeepers whom the Taliban has destroyed; Zunaira, his wife, exceedingly beautiful, who was once a brilliant teacher and is now no longer allowed to leave her home without an escort or covering her face. Intersecting their world is Atiq, a prison keeper, a man who has sincerely adopted the Taliban ideology and struggles to keep his faith, and his wife, Musarrat.
I find it very interesting to get a glimpse into this world, and perhaps makes me a little more sympathetic to the lives of those involved.
It's been extremely hot this last week, so not much reading (in bus shelters). I'm only painting on Wednesdays, the remainder of the week I sort of slogged away with "nothing" much accomplished. But, this week will be different, I have a plan... It's still going to be hot... so I'm setting myself up on the front porch.
I'm still thinking about , the Unquiet Dead, that to me is a sign of a good book. I actually remember my mom and our neighbor discussing the situation in Srebinica, and how it compared to much of the situation during the Nazi days. These two women were survivors of this time, each in their own experience, they were most sympathetic and emotional. Clearly even though we say "we shall never forget", we do. And yet, it goes on in many countries of the world today.

That does sound interesting. I might give it a try after I catch up on the books at the top of my list.
It's been really hot and humid here the last few weeks, but the last two days have been a bit cooler. I can't imagine having to sit in a bus shelter in the heat. I hope you take one of those cooling wraps and some water with you.
I've never heard of library workers striking. I hope it's resolved soon.
Yep still think about a book is a sign it was good. We have been hotter than normal here too. Enjoy your book and hope the library worker's strike is over soon.
Irene, you said it well. It really is quite absurd that in today's world people are living lives from a hundred years ago.
Library workers on strike for real, dear Irene? I've never heard of such a thing! They've gotten to know me pretty well at my local library because I've been renting DVDs to watch while it's so beastly hot. Starting on the new War and Peace tomorrow. xoxo
